Kim Chung

Kimberly Chung is an associate professor in the Department of Community, Agriculture, Recreation and Resource Studies. Kim is trained as a nutritionist and agricultural economist. Her work with the Mott Group focused on increasing civic engagement around issues pertaining to food security, with specific emphasis on marginalized and underprivileged populations. Kim teaches graduate courses on Qualitative Research Techniques as well as Community Resource Development. She is particularly interested in community-based and participatory approaches toward research.

 Amanda Fessler

Amanda Fessler is an MSU graduate with a B.A. in Sociology.  She hailed from Fenton, MI.  She joined the Mott Group for Sustainable Food Systems in May 2003 as a research and outreach intern.  She assisted with 2003 and 2004 Family Nutrition Program projects as they relate to community food systems under the direction of Barb Mutch and Kim Chung.  She was promoted to Program Associate in 2004 and worked with Barb Mutch and Mike Hamm in the developmental stages of a food policy council for the state.  Amanda compiled the final report for the 2004 Community Food Network funded by the Family Nutrition Program.

 

  Marty Heller

Marty Heller served as a research specialist with projects focusing on using watershed-scale modeling to compare the ecological services provided by pasture-based and confinement-based animal production systems. He also developed Food Connections: Capital Area Community Food Profile, a booklet to frame and communicate ideas of a community-based food system.

  Betty Izumi

Betty Izumi completed her PhD in 2008 from Michigan State University where she worked and studied with the CS Mott Group for Sustainable Food Systems. She received her Master’s in Public Health and her Registered Dietitian credential at the University of California, Berkeley and her Bachelor of Science in Dietetics at the University of British Columbia. Betty’s research examines the complexity of farm to school programs, which collectively comprise a national and local effort to integrate locally grown foods into public K-12 schools, from the perspectives of farmers, food service professionals, and food distributors. Prior to moving to Michigan in 2004, Betty worked with the Oregon State University Extension Service in the Portland metro area where she collaborated with government agencies, schools, and non-profit organizations to address issues such as lack of access to healthful foods and barriers to farming among recent immigrants. Broadly, her interests include nutrition, food access, community-based food systems, sustainable agriculture, and community-based participatory research approaches. Betty will be part of the 2008-2010 cohort of the Kellogg Health Scholars Program and will be at the University of Michigan School of Public Health training site. izumibet@msu.edu

   
Derrick Kiyabu
 
Derrick Kiyabu is a master’s student in Community, Agriculture, Recreation, and Resource Studies with a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture. Before joining the Mott Group in 2007, he worked at a nonprofit community-based economic development organization in Hawaii and with a nonprofit youth organic farm. Derrick is interested in rural development and sustainable agriculture.  He provides technical assistance support on the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s Food and Fitness Initiative with the aim of increasing communities’ capacity to affect change in their food system.

Viki Lorraine

Viki Lorraine was an associate program leader with MSU Extension. Viki focused on the development of regional, state and local level Farm to School programming. This work found her involved in everything from school gardens to distribution of Michigan-grown foods in Michigan schools. She was also the state coordinator for the nutrition education component of Project FRESH and Senior Project FRESH – Michigan’s Farmers Market Nutrition Programs for WIC participants and older adults. She was also Program Leader on two nutrition education projects: produce markets in churches and youth farm stand development. Before coming to the Mott group, she spent 15 years as a faculty member at Eastern Virginia Medical School developing and implementing outreach programs to improve community health.

Meagan Shedd

Meagan Shedd was a program leader with MSU Extension in Family and Consumer Sciences. Her work focused on access and availability of local foods with a primary audience of limited income families. Using social marketing techniques and through community coalitions, she provided support for nutrition education for families, and encourages community involvement to precipitate change in how families access nutritious foods. She was also interested in nutrition as an indicator of school readiness in preschool aged children, and the role of literacy in nutrition education.

Celeste Starks

Celeste joined the Mott Group in October 2005 as a specialist after spending nine years with the Center for Urban Affairs. In her work with the group, she met with MSU Extension partners, Michigan Youth Farmstand coordinators, and coalitions across the state for the Earned Income Tax Credit outreach project. She had the opportunity to attend, moderate or present at theGrowing Power Conference, Choices Conference, National Tax Coalition Conference and Affordable Housing Conference, further enriching her work experience with the Mott Group. 

 


Debby Williams

Debby Williams was hired while working on her bachelor’s degree in Horticulture. While studying full-time Debby assisted with the Animals in the Food System Conference. Following her May 2005 graduation from MSU, she worked with us as an outreach specialist during summer and fall, establishing the Michigan farmers’ market website (www.farmersmarkets.msu.edu) and organizing rapid market assessments with farmers markets in Zeeland, Gaylord, Saginaw and Flint. Debby is highly skilled in technology in addition to her love for and ability to grow fruits and vegetables. Debby relocated to Chicago and spent her first summer working on an urban community garden project.  williamsdeb@sbcglobal.net

 

Barbara Mutch

Barbara Mutch was an outreach specialist in community food systems. Barb’s work focused on community development, public health, food security, and access and availability. Her projects include working with community coalitions to promote healthy lifestyles, a family gardening project to promote food security, coordination of the Choices conference, fund development for Community Food System programs, and serving on Task Force B of the Michigan Food Policy Council, as a liaison to the Michigan Nutrition Network, the Michigan State Nutrition Action Plan, the Vital Aging Team, and the Connecting Michigan Families project.
