Since 1988, the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program has helped advance farming systems that are profitable, environmentally sound and good for communities through a nationwide research and education grants program. Part of USDA's Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service, SARE is managed in partnership with regional land grant hosts. It funds projects and conducts outreach designed to improve agricultural systems. Michigan, along with eleven other states, is part of SARE’s North Central Region (NCR). Michigan’s SARE Coordinator is Dale Mutch.
NCR SARE administers four competitive grants programs:
- Research and education
- Professional development
- Farmer/ Rancher
- Graduate Student
The Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN) is the national outreach arm of the SARE program. SAN publishes a variety of print and electronic resources for farmers, agricultural educators, and consumers. SAN also hosts SANET-MG, a sustainable agriculture listserv with over 600 subscribers from around the globe.
